COLLAGES BY MIA MAKILA

Inspired by early renaissance masters, such as Bosch and Bruegel but also the Disney Studios (golden era), vintage toys, lowbrow art, burlesque and gothic dark art, Makila creates highly detailed collages with a perfect mix of candy scented sweetness and disturbing, twisted and macabre elements. The gallery includes both Makila’s digital collages and her earlier paper collages. For availability, please contact the artist.

“When I still made paper collages, I could never perfect my imaginary worlds. The glue was visible, I could not manipulate the cut-outs – but with Photoshop I am free to create my worlds without limitations of the material properties. It gives me such satisfaction, perhaps because I am a true perfectionist.” –  Mia Makila

“When I am painting, I work slowly and with precision to create a very controlled expression, but in my digital art I am more free to experiment and let my subconscious do most of the work, almost like being in a trance. The two working methods are very different. I prefer the digital process because I love being on unfamiliar ground, not knowing where I am going.” – Mia Makila
